MODERN

Spring 2012 saw the beginning of an exciting new development which in the coming year will transform the west end of the Sainsbury Centre. Exhibitions of modern and contemporary art, a new café bar and a sculpture garden will all be themed around the 'Modern'.

The west end of the Sainsbury Centre offers a space to enjoy art, relax and socialise. Entry is free.

Modernisms

On the mezzanine, the Modernisms display explores ideas in modern art and design over the last hundred years. The opening display, The First Moderns: Art Nouveau, from Nature to Abstraction, features works from the Centre’s Anderson Collection of Art Nouveau alongside loans from other public collections including the V&A and Glasgow School of Art as well as from various private collections.

The gallery will show a cycle of one-year displays.

Next Modern

Next Modern is a new exhibition programme dedicated to contemporary art, showing the work of emerging artists and designers from all over the world. We open with an exhibition of the work of the American photographer Avi Gupta.

Modern Sculpture Garden

The Modern Sculpture Garden, at the west end of the Sainsbury Centre, showcases large-scale works by modern and contemporary sculptors, providing a wonderful outlook through Norman Foster’s giant window. Thomas Houseago's monumental bronze, Hermaphrodite, is the first display.
