The artists included in the collection have rejected the creation of representational space in their work and pursued instead the compositional possibilities of bold clear colour and geometric forms and progressions. This approach was explored early in the 20th century by artists working in Paris, the Netherlands and Germany (Bauhaus movement) and continues to interest artists today.
Sculptural works in the collection include Kenneth Martin’s kinetic Variable Screw which creates a perfect balance of elements in space. Francois Morellet’s Sphère-Trame demonstrates an interest in the machine manufacture of multiple geometric forms and the way in which the experience of an object could be transformed through movement.
